Supporting community-led projects to help your local area recover from the COVID-19 crisis
A site -specific audio tour to celebrate 20 years of the community arts festival Brockley Max in Lewisham.
Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.
The community encompassed by Brockley Max has changed drastically in the 20 years since the festival began. It is more family-friendly, has more amenities & the socio-economic make-up of the area had changed. Memories of Brockley Max will be a curated self-guided audio-visual tour of festival locations in Brockley, Crofton Park & Ladywell both past & present with interviews, music & images. The project will introduce & memorialise the events & venues from previous years, giving a social history of our creative community. It will celebrate the 20 years of Brockley Max & re-engage the community with our local arts, so badly affected by Covid. Participants will engage with the project in a Covid-safe way, using a phone app to access interviews & past performance at event venues. To ensure accessibility for all, a downloadable guide will be produced, which will form part of the project’s legacy of a digital & physical exhibition where people can add their memories of the festival.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Participants will not only enjoy a look back at past events, but become aware of the changes in our community over 20 years. The awareness of the loss of venues & opportunities to perform will remind participants of the crucial role the arts & venues play, particularly with the impact lockdown has had on the creative arts. Post project, local residents will be able to benefit from visiting the permanent display in the community library and on the Brockley Max website. People will learn about the history of the festival and Brockley Max’s role in creating & supporting a thriving artistic community. There will also be the opportunity for people to share their memories and photos of the festival events and venues. Together, these will help reinforce the importance of performance spaces and artists, and engender support for securing the future of community arts.
Steps to get it done:
We will be working in partnership with local organisations including the Brockley Society, Crofton Park Community Library, Crofton Park Local History Group, the Ladywell Society, artists, performers and venue owners to produce a lively and informative narrative about our shared festival experiences.
