By Friends of Melyn Mynach Park
The regeneration of Gorseinons biggest park. To install new play areas and facilities for the public while maintaining its unique heritage. Creating a woodland experience to help biodiversity locally
Melyn Mynach Park is the largest park in Gorseinon, Loughor, Penyrheol and surrounding areas. We would like to improve this amazing space for future generations. Our aim is to build upon the success of the bike/ scooter track by adding more facilities for the area. We would like to add a play area that is sympathetic to the surroundings but that also celebrates the industrial heritage of the site. To go along with this we would like to create picnic and seating areas. Due to the size of the park it is also possible to create a wildlife pond and woodland to help improve biodiversity in the area. We would like to include projects to encourage wild life into the area such as bees, birds and hedgehogs. This site has a lot of history, especially will the 'old mill'. It would be great to see this restored and add educational features to celebrate our unique history. We're hoping to secure a pledge from Swansea Council towards this crowdfunding campaign so we need your help!
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
There will be huge benefits for the community. We have the support of the Town Council and local councillors which will help the project. By improving the area we believe we can create something truly unique in Swansea. A park with something for everyone. With Covid19, it is more important than ever to have safe and accessible out doors areas. With large open spaces, play areas, bike tracks and woodlands walks the park will become a destination for families for a day out, taking their daily exercise or just to immerse yourself in nature. We hope to install educational materials so people can learn about our area and its heritage, especially the mill, but also about the importance of our wildlife and environment. By creating facilities aimed at children, families, teenagers, walkers, history and wildlife enthusiasts we hope to create a sense of community pride around the project. The benefit of providing activities/ facilities is that it will help combat antisocial behaviour.
Steps to get it done:
Melyn Mynach is already a destination, due to the space and bike track, for many people out of it local area. By adding to its facilities we would hope to encourage more people to visit the park. This would have an added benefit for the local high street and shops due to the close proximity of the park to the main shopping area.
