The idea

Dancing Memories is a four-year cultural initiative supporting people with dementia, stroke survivors, and the wider community across Ellesmere Port. It combines movement sessions, nostalgic arts workshops, and intergenerational performances to improve well-being, promote connection, and enhance cultural engagement. Each year builds on the last: from foundational CPD and community sessions to artist-led performances, school-care home collaborations, and youth showcases. Activities are led by professional artists and evaluated through feedback, case studies, and a final research paper. The project also includes capacity building for local artists and leaves behind a sustainable Mature Movers framework for future delivery.

What we'll deliver

  • Deliver 4 blocks of 6-week movement sessions for dementia and stroke groups per year
  • Host 5 community “Mature Movers” sessions with integrated social gatherings
  • Run nostalgic knitting machine workshops led by artist Marie Jones
  • Provide live music and dance performances in care homes
  • Facilitate CPD training for local artists to create a sustainable delivery model
  • Stage intergenerational performances linking schools and care homes
  • Deliver youth dance performances by Purple Gecko Dancers
  • Produce a final research paper capturing the project’s outcomes and impact

Why it's a great idea

Dancing Memories will improve mental and physical well-being among older adults and those with dementia or stroke, reduce isolation, and foster community connections. It delivers high-quality cultural experiences through live music and dance, and strengthens intergenerational links between schools and care homes. Local artists will benefit from CPD and paid opportunities, boosting the region’s cultural economy. The use of nostalgic arts and sustainable practices enhances emotional engagement and environmental responsibility. Community venues will be activated, and social value will be added through volunteer involvement and local partnerships. The project will also generate a research paper to share learning and best practice. Ultimately, Dancing Memories creates a replicable, sustainable cultural model that leaves a lasting legacy for Cheshire West.
