The idea
Less waste, less cost, less effect on the earth... what is there not to love? We plan to tackle the effect of period poverty by educating and supporting those on lowest incomes to make the change to reusable sanitary products, with an aim to increase attendance in schools and encourage more people through the doors of community buildings to take part in our education sessions. Our pilot session is due to be in a launched in a community centre in the WV10 postcode and aims to encourage 25 local people through the doors.
Why? The cost of single use pads over 10 years could be as much as £600 or alternatively £10 for 1 menstrual cup... NO BRAINER! Imagine if we can help those on lower incomes to save money each month just by swapping a sanitary item! We plan to work in and advertise free products in community buildings in: The Scotlands and Bushbury, Low HIll, Fallings Park, Heath Town, Blakenhall, Bilston, St Peters, Ettingshall and schools which fall under these catchment areas.
What we'll deliver
- Deliver educational sessions to 500 people aged 16 and over
- Reduce stigma associated with periods
- Collect and distribute new and reusable sanitary products

- Educate the wider public on sustainable sanitary products
Why it's a great idea
By reducing costs associated with periods through supplying menstrual cups and reusable pads we tackle period poverty head on, we offer a sustainable alternative to single use pads and tampons, by gifting these following education sessions our delegates will feel empowered and excited for change! No more popping a pad up the sleeve to go to the bathroom, no more missing school because pads are too costly on a low budget, no more embarressment at "leaking through". We want to make periods green by reducing household waste, business waste and costs associated with menstruating. We will train embassadors for greener periods, upskilling those in the poorest communities, take on volunteers to assist in the delivery of the project and empower menstruators to take back control of their periods!
Steps to get it done
- Make contact with 10 schools and community organisations
- Educating the wider public on the benefit of sustainable menstrual products
- Obtain feedback on reusable sanitary products to share with a wider audience
- Deliver "Making periods green" sessions to a minimum of 500 people
- Donate 200 reusable sanitary items
