The idea
Good Things Collective provide skills, stuff and space to support anyone to be creative. We run exciting, creative projects which are sociable and sustainable, making “good things” happen in Morecambe. We believe that everyone should have access to arts and culture, and that this makes where we live a better place to be.
In April 2024, we relocated to a new home on Northumberland Street. This building houses a thriving community of artists, and a growing programme of creative clubs and co-working spaces. Throughout 2025, we’re developing a new community hub including a stage, kitchen, garden and workshop. This will be a place for making things, sharing food, hosting performances and getting together.
It’s important that our building is welcoming and friendly. This means we need to fundraise to make our doorways and floors accessible for wheelchair users so that everyone regardless of physical ability can easily navigate our building and participate fully in everything we do.
What we'll deliver
- Improve accessibility to our building, including widening doorways and installing access ramps.
- Improve and decorate our atrium with furnishings made by our collective members.
- Run an open house event in October.
- Run more creative clubs and workshops in our new community hub.
Why it's a great idea
In June this year, we signed a 10-year lease, which means that, for the first time, we have a permanent home. We can now grow into more of our building, offering a wider range of activities and reaching more people in the area. We’re excited to really start work on creating a vibrant, colourful, friendly place for anyone to come and get involved in a variety of exciting things.
Building our community hub and making sure it’s fully accessible means we can:
1) remove barriers related to getting involved in our creative activities for people of all physical abilities;
2) increase space for our creative activities, opening access to our extension area which will be a place for workshops, performances and events;
3) continue to contribute to Morecambe’s creative public offer, growing our creative programme by bringing more voices into our collective;
4) offer more paid opportunities for people in Morecambe from running our community kitchen, performance and workshop area.
Steps to get it done
- Confirming work schedule and contracting for building and access improvements (i.e. doorways and ramps)
- Carrying building and access improvements
- Making new furnishings and fixtures for the new community hub, made by members of the collective;
- Decorating the community hub
- Launching the community hub with a celebration and performance event
