This project was funded on 06 Jun 2014!

Throughout Our Big Gig we will be programming a variety of music acts to perform. This will include music from local bands and artists of all genres from soul to indie rock, giving them an opportunity to perform in front of a new audience in a new venue. Between these performances we will also have a series of local DJs and other music acts such as beatboxers. We want our day to be as diverse as possible so there can hopefully be some form of music for everyone!

We will also be running a series of interactive music workshops with trained music practitioners from our organisation. To give people the opportunity to engage with music in as many different ways as possible, we will deliver workshops covering a variety of aspects of music. These will include djembe drumming, DJ sessions, vocal groups and there will be a variety of instruments available for people to come along and have a go!

What we'll deliver:

  • Deliver a series of music workshops and activities that all members of the community can participate in
  • Programme a full day of new and exciting local music from rising talent in Sunderland and the North East
  • Promote the creatives that are working in Sunderland to help engage more people with their work

Why it's a great idea:

Monumental Music CIC have plenty of experience in delivering high quality live events and music workshops right across the city of Sunderland and beyond. We want more people to engage with music and to see music as a way of tackling social issues within the community. Music is an inclusive activity and we think that there is something out there for everyone who shows an interest in it, so by creating the opportunity for people to come along and have a go at different music activities we hope to promote the positive side of music.

Our Big Gig will also give local acts an opportunity to showcase their talents to audiences that they may not have been able to access before. We can show the progression of some of the acts that we have worked with or who have used our facilities and show the people of Sunderland the amazing, high quality music that is being created on our doorstep.

Steps to get it done:

  • We will contact all bands. artists and workshop leaders to offer them the opportunity to be involved in Our Big Gig
  • With a team of event assistants and planners we will programme the day so that it runs smoothly
  • We will promote the gig through all local press, online, social media and through music-related businesses in Sunderland
  • We will put together a team of 15 volunteers who will help to run the day and promote the event
