Spirit of the South: Exploring the history of Lympne Castle
ITV News MERIDIANThe castle may dominate Lympne, but this is a village of 1,500 people with a strong sense of community.
More about our impact
The environment
We've planted 50 native trees which is one of the biggest and cheapest ways of taking CO2 out of the atmosphere to help tackle the climate crisis and planted thousands of yellow rattle seed in partnership with The Bumblebee Conservation Trust (BBCT).
The local economy
Improved access to local businesses, clubs, community groups and access to a network of public footpaths connecting our village.
Volunteering, jobs & education
Various volunteering groups have been formed to plant trees, carry out a tree watering program, maintain and repair existing play equipment, install benches, setting out of track, turf cutting and labour intensive task of shifting over 800m of turfs! Further plans are underway to form community wildlife conservation and gardening groups, plus get a group of youths to lead on designing and laying out our new bike pump track.
Arts, culture & heritage
Lympne Conservation area our track provides access to a number of footpaths linking to historic Saxon Shore Way, Stutfall Castle, Lympne Castle, Royal Military Canal, St. Stephen’s Church. During tree planting we even thought we may have discovered part of a Roman road! It wasn't but we plan to include link to Lympne's Roman history in our next phase of the development.
Activity, health and leisure
4 times around our track and our community will complete their Daily Mile! The daily mile is a fully-inclusive, free and simple initiative which improves the physical and mental health. We hope many of our community will now enjoy their daily mile around our track.
