The idea

"Let the River Roar! Treasure the Severn Bore" is a heartfelt initiative to protect the iconic Severn Bore, this unique tidal phenomenon is a vital ecological and cultural jewel of the Severn Vale.

This living landmark faces increasing threats from development, pollution and climate change, yet lacks formal recognition. The project seeks to champion its preservation through eco-focused legal advocacy, led by Earth Law expert Monica Feria-Tinta, and by hosting inclusive community events that celebrate the river's legacy and reconnect people with its majestic flow.

“At its heart is a single, transformative idea: that rivers are not mere matter for human use, but living beings—who should be recognised as such in both imagination and law". Robert Macfarlane - Author

"As a naturalist and conservationist, the importance of the Severn catchment area is indisputable". Ian Redmond OBE - Supporter

‘I am the river; the river is me.’ - Māori proverb

What we'll deliver

  • A legal briefing paper by Monica Feria-Tinta on protections for the Bore
  • A public event with Monica to share insights and engage the community
  • A short film or media piece to document and inspire wider support

Why it's a great idea

Legal Innovation
When EDF’s controversial development plans for the Severn Vale were revealed, it became clear that the potential impact on the Severn Bore had not been adequately considered...

The legal briefing by Monica Feria-Tinta will guide future advocacy efforts, helping us understand how to act as guardians of the Bore. Should future development pose a threat, the Bore will be represented as a vital ecological and cultural entity with its own voice.

Inspired by Leading Practice
Supported by River Action, inspired by ‘Love our Ouse’ and River Dôn Project. Our aim is to facilitate an innovative, multi-disciplinary river guardianship model. We are committed to collaborative action throughout this project.

Cultural Connection
Our vision is to grow a community-led cultural movement rooted in reverence for the River and the Bore. By honouring its heritage and ecological significance, we reconnect with the centuries of riverside tradition, strengthening identity and resilience.
