The idea
As part of the Gujarati Arts, Culture & Heritage festival on 7th July 2018 in Leicester, we are arranging a free folk music gathering for the elderly community. This is to increase their engagement and participation in a live traditional performance, which we understand through conversation with them that they will find more accessible than an evening performance.
What we'll deliver
- Transport to and from venue
- A two-hour musical performance in an accessible venue for up to 800 people.
- Light refreshments for attendees.
- Provide kids play area to encourage families to come along too
Why it's a great idea
This event will help overcome the isolation felt by many older people in the community, enable interaction with others and promote social inclusion. The event will help elderly participants reconnect with their cultural and traditional music which in turn has been shown to be something that reduces stress and stress-related illnesses. Listening to songs and music and music that they know and love, and that brings back memories of their younger times, will have positive emotional, mental and spiritual impacts. As well as having fun with friends and family in a safe environment, it will have a positive impact on the health and well being of those attending.
Steps to get it done
- Engagement with organisation and groups looking after elderly community
- Promotion of crowdfunding campaign among relevant groups and organisations.
- Confirm venue and secure services of performers.
- Encourage attendance among South Asian elders – and make sure the experience is a positive one for them.
