The environment

The environment

Sustainability and environmental responsibility were important considerations in the planning and delivery of the Lancaster Chinese New Year Festival. We took several steps to ensure the festival was as eco-friendly as possible and aimed to reduce our overall carbon footprint. 1. Encouraging Sustainable Transport We actively encouraged all visitors, performers, and volunteers to travel to the festival by public transport, walking, or cycling. By promoting these eco-friendly options, we helped reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions in the city. Clear information about train and bus routes, as well as walking directions between venues, was provided on our website and social media channels in the lead-up to the event. 2. Centralised, Accessible Locations The festival was held entirely within Lancaster’s city centre and across two main venues—chosen specifically for their accessibility by foot and public transport. This city-centre focus allowed attendees to move between activities without needing to use cars, reducing the environmental impact associated with travel. 3. Reducing Carbon Footprint By designing the event to be compact, walkable, and accessible, we were able to lower the festival’s carbon footprint. The majority of our attendees arrived without the need for private vehicles, which significantly decreased CO₂ emissions typically associated with large events. Through these initiatives, the Lancaster Chinese New Year Festival demonstrated that large-scale cultural celebrations can be both inclusive and environmentally conscious. We hope this approach will inspire other event organisers in the region to consider sustainable practices in future planning.

The local economy

The local economy

Increased Foot Traffic and Sales The Lancaster Chinese New Year Festival drew thousands of visitors into the city centre, translating into a direct economic boost for local businesses. During the festival period, city-centre shops reported a 30% increase in sales compared to the previous week, a clear indicator of the festival’s positive economic impact. Month-Long Festive Atmosphere To maintain excitement throughout the month, we provided free festival decorations to businesses in Lancaster. This not only enhanced the festive atmosphere but also encouraged more people to explore and shop locally over an extended period, creating sustained benefits for retailers and service providers. Support for Local Traders and Hospitality Restaurants, cafés, and market stalls benefited from the rise in footfall. Many businesses reported higher customer turnout, with visitors and families staying longer to take advantage of Lancaster’s diverse dining and shopping options—further stimulating the local economy. Through these efforts, the Lancaster Chinese New Year Festival has proven itself to be an effective driver of community-wide prosperity, generating lasting goodwill and financial benefits for local businesses.

Arts, culture & heritage

Arts, culture & heritage

Showcasing Authentic Chinese Traditions Through performances like the Lion and Dragon parades, Kunqu Opera, and traditional Chinese music and dance, we introduced authentic aspects of Chinese culture to the Lancaster community. This not only preserved and celebrated ancient art forms but also broadened cultural awareness among local audiences. Empowering Local Artists & Talent We collaborated with local performers, musicians, and creatives, providing them with a platform to showcase their artistry to thousands of visitors. By combining local talents with nationally recognized acts, we strengthened Lancaster’s arts scene and encouraged future cultural initiatives. Passing Down Intangible Heritage Our free cultural workshops—covering calligraphy, lantern-making, paper-cutting, and more—gave participants hands-on experience with traditional Chinese arts. By engaging families, children, and adults in these hands-on sessions, we helped sustain and promote these art forms for the next generation. Through these efforts, the Lancaster Chinese New Year Festival successfully promoted cross-cultural understanding, amplified local and international artistry, and preserved important cultural traditions for future generations.

Activity, health and leisure

Activity, health and leisure

Active Participation and Outdoor Engagement By holding the festival in Lancaster’s city centre, we created a lively outdoor environment that encouraged people of all ages to walk around, explore the lantern displays, and participate in various activities. This not only helped visitors stay physically active but also fostered a sense of community and well-being. Interactive Workshops and Demonstrations The festival included workshops such as Tai Chi demonstrations, calligraphy, and lantern-making. Tai Chi sessions, in particular, introduced an accessible form of gentle exercise that improves flexibility, balance, and mindfulness—helping participants experience a positive impact on both their physical and mental health. Social Connection and Leisure for All With its family-friendly orientation and free cultural events, the festival offered a stress-free and enjoyable atmosphere. Engaging in communal celebrations and leisure activities has been shown to improve mood, reduce stress, and enhance overall mental well-being. By creating shared experiences, the event contributed to better emotional health for the entire community. Through these efforts, the Lancaster Chinese New Year Festival promoted an active, healthy, and leisure-filled environment where attendees could stay physically engaged, learn new skills, and share meaningful moments together.
