The idea
Lancaster Chinese New Year Festival 2026 will transform the city centre into blaze of colour and culture. Lantern arches, lion- and dragon-parades and a headline theatre show frame a free programme of dance, music, martial arts, workshops and street food that brings China’s Spring Festival to Lancashire. The event fills the quiet post-Christmas period, boosts high-street footfall and meets rising demand for inclusive, family-friendly experiences.
Who benefits?
Children & schools – hands-on calligraphy, paper-cutting and storytelling workshops that broaden horizons.
Young people & students – creative, volunteer and performance opportunities that build skills and CVs.
Older residents & community groups – accessible, sociable activities that combat winter isolation.
Local artists, traders & venues – paid bookings and extra custom in the off-season.
Back us to cover logistics, artist fees and accessibility measures so everyone can share in this joyful celebration of the city diversity

Why it's a great idea
The festival delivers cultural, social and economic gains for Lancaster and Lancashire.
• Cultural literacy – free calligraphy, paper-cutting, music and martial-arts workshops give 1,500 people first-hand experience of Chinese heritage.
• Community cohesion – a mixed committee and 80 volunteers from local, Asian and student groups plan and run events together, forging friendships and mutual respect.
• Well-being – bright parades and accessible indoor sessions break the winter lull, encouraging families, older residents and newcomers to connect and feel they belong.
• Local economy – last year’s event injected economic effects into city-centre businesses; 35 traders and 25 freelance artists and performances gain paid bookings in a quiet season.
By pairing authentic tradition with inclusive participation, the festival knits Lancaster’s social fabric, celebrates diversity and positions the city as a welcoming cultural destination.
