'The Ladies That...' are a group of 5 professional actors/writer/director/composer, who in 2020 created 'Ladies That Bus' & in 2023, 'Ladies That Dig'. Both projects were funded by Arts Council England & created from a period of community engagement(on buses, allotments) where we met YOU...hundreds of 'Ladies That...' in Lancashire, Cumbria & Yorkshire. The incredible stories we heard were used to create a story sharing night, then into two wonderful, acclaimed pieces of theatre that toured back to the communities from whence the stories came. We now want to met, 'Ladies That Splash'. We'll run story sharing & interview sessions in the local area & come & swim in the Bay with you. Take us to the places where you like to 'splash'. Invite us to your groups. What are the benefits of being around water? In return we'll run singing & writing workshops & from your stories we'll create a work-in-progress free local first showing of our new play, for and about you...'LADIES THAT SPLASH!'

Why it's a great idea:
The 'Ladies That..' team has found that working, with individuals & groups & sharing stories, gives a sense of catharsis, community connection & being part of something special. People connect over the chosen topic, helping with loneliness & social isolation. They hear their stories amplified & shared with hundreds of people & we know groups/individuals who have participated have felt empowered and uplifted by the championing of their experiences. We wish to champion Morecambe, Lancaster & the Lakes and find out what the benefits are to mental health of outdoor swimming against the backdrop of the Bay. Also to elevate the stories of those from communities who experience a cultural/social barrier to swimming. To sensitively find out the reasons why. We wish to be fully inclusive & one of our team now has level 2 BSL. The project will close with a sharing evening with participation from locals alongside our professionals & music we will all have created during the two week process.

About the space
Morecambe has one of the most incredible coastal views in the country. Since Covid there has been an upsurge in people using the water for swimming and water sports. The area has challenges & areas of social & economic deprivation & our team, one of whom lives in the town, would like to help bring The Arts into peoples everyday lives

VolunteerHelen trained at RADA & plays the character of Hannah Riley in BBC Radio 4’s ‘The Archers’. Recent Theatre includes ‘Jungle Book’ and ‘Robin Hood’ for The Dukes Theatre & tours of 'Ladies That Bus'(2020) & 'Ladies That Dig' (2023), for which she also composed the music. She has been a member of the BBC Radio Drama Company & performed onboard the QM2 in ‘Much Ado about Nothing’, ‘Merchant of Venice’ & ‘Canterbury Tales’. She worked on a songwriting voyage across the Atlantic, 'Songs In The Key Of Sea' with Squeeze & Roger Daltry.
Helen sings with local bands, plays flute, guitar & uke & is a memebr of Baybeat Street Band at More Music, Morecambe. She feels strongly about making theatre accessible & reaching communities who do not have easy access to the arts.
Director Kirstie Davis has worked at many theatres around the country inc Lyric Theatre Hammersmith, Salisbury Playhouse & Cheltenham Everyman. She was CEO and Artistic Director of Forest Forge & recently directed 'Robin Hood' at The Dukes, Lancaster.
Writer Joyce Branagh is a Writer, Director & Actor based in the NW. Her plays include: Ladies that Bus; Ladies that Dig: Boomtown Gals, (nominated for Best Fringe Play at the Manchester Theatre Awards). She has also written 8 pantomimes, one of which has integrated BSL for Cast Theatre in Doncaster. Her ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ won Best Script at the Great British Pantomime Awards this year.
Lisa Howard is a versatile, experienced artist, highly skilled in acting, singing, directing & puppeteering. Lisa has carved a career in theatre, film and TV, embraces new experiences, always seeking to nurture her skills and broaden her knowledge base & recently achieved Level 2 in British Sign Language. Recent work includes: Title role in the environmental horror short film KIDDO; Baba Yaga in Les Enfants Terribles’ spectacular production of House With Chicken Legs; Helping to develop new plays with companies Az2B and Ladies That ...
Actor/workshop leader- Purvi Parmar is a born and bred northern actor. She trained at Pace University School of Performing Arts, NYC, before returning back to the UK.Theatre credits include: THE BOOK THIEF, (Bolton Octagon, Original cast); AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, (Theatre by the Lake, Hull Truck); ALICE IN WONDERLAND, ( New Vic, Stoke); THE JUNGLE BOOK, (Dukes Theatre, Lancaster)
