The idea
At Chaucer Community Primary School, we deeply value the importance of our school environment and the role it plays in enriching the lives of our pupils. We are a larger than average primary school. We have a very high levels of social and economic deprivation with an increasingly large number of pupils coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, currently 69%. We have a local authority SEN hub attached to our school for whom outdoor play is vital.
One of the vital resources in our school is our astro turf pitch. This facility serves not only as an essential space for PE lessons, playtimes, and after-school activities but also as a gathering point for community clubs during weekdays, weekends and school holidays. Unfortunately, the current condition of the astro turf is deteriorating and will eventually become unsafe for our children and community members alike.
Thank you for considering our request.
What we'll deliver
- The new surface will be installed on our astro turf.
Why it's a great idea
Our school currently lacks green space, which limits the opportunities we can provide for our pupils and community. Resurfacing the astro turf would be a massive advantage, offering a safe and versatile area for our school and community.
With this improved surface, we would be able to continue to deliver outstanding physical education lessons. It would also support both structured and unstructured play times. This would give our pupils the chance to enhance their social skills and overall well-being. Furthermore, it would open up avenues for physical after-school clubs, allowing pupils to explore a variety of sports and activities in a suitable environment.
A major factor that should not be overlooked is the access this facility would continue to provide to our local community. By allowing the astro turf to be used on weekdays, weekends, and during school holidays, we foster community engagement and encourage healthy lifestyles among local families.
Steps to get it done

The astro turf has played a crucial role in our local area, particularly with initiatives led by Fleetwood Town Community Trust and Sport School. Fleetwood Town Community Trust, in particular, has been instrumental in promoting well-being, social interaction, and healthy lifestyles. Their efforts to provide opportunities for our community to engage in physical activities outside of school hours have had a fantastic impact. Moreover, the involvement of Sport School, which runs SEND-specific after-school clubs, is commendable as it ensures inclusivity and provides access to sporting activities for all children, regardless of their needs.
Over the years, we have managed financially to patch up various issues as they arose. But we are now approaching the point where the astro turf may soon be deemed unfit for use. With increasing wear and tear, and considering the important role it plays for our children and the community, we cannot afford to let this resource fall into disrepair.
