More about our impact
The environment
Protecting the riverbank from further erosion was one of the original aims of the project, and the completed launch has significantly improved the resilience of this section of the River Soar. The facility also supports LOPC's role as an environmental steward. Through our partnership with the Canal & River Trust, we help care for approximately two miles of the River Soar and its surrounding environment. Since the launch was completed, volunteers and participants using the facility have collected more than 2,305 bags of litter from the river and riverbanks through organised clean-up activities. Many of these litter picks take place both from the banks and directly from the water using canoes and kayaks launched from the facility itself. The project has therefore not only protected the river environment physically, but has inspired thousands of people to value, care for and actively improve Leicester's blue and green spaces.
The local economy
The improved launch has helped attract visitors from across Leicester, the East Midlands and beyond, bringing additional spending into the local economy through accommodation, hospitality, retail and transport. The increased efficiency and capacity of the launch has enabled LOPC to host larger groups and expand its programme of activities, supporting the long-term sustainability of the Centre and the jobs it provides. The facility has contributed to the growth of paddle sports participation in Leicester and strengthened the city's reputation as a destination for outdoor recreation and community events. By investing in quality infrastructure, the project has helped secure the future of a valued local charity and the economic activity it generates.
Volunteering, jobs & education
The launch has become a gateway to learning and skills development. Since its completion: 18 Apprentice Outdoor Instructors have successfully completed their apprenticeships at LOPC. 50% achieved Distinction grades, demonstrating the quality of training and support provided. In 2023, LOPC was recognised as one of the Top 50 Apprenticeship Employers in the UK. Hundreds of volunteers have supported environmental projects, community events and activity delivery using the launch as a base. Thousands of young people have developed confidence, teamwork, resilience and water safety skills through educational visits and outdoor learning programmes. The project has therefore contributed directly to education, employability and volunteering opportunities within the community.
Arts, culture & heritage
The improved access to the River Soar has enabled LOPC to celebrate and support Leicester's rich cultural diversity. Most notably, the facility has become an important venue supporting the Hindu celebration of Ganesh Visarjan, providing safe and dignified access to the river for this significant cultural event. Participation grew from around 500 people in 2024 to over 1,500 people in 2025, creating opportunities for cultural expression, understanding and community cohesion. The River Soar has long been part of Leicester's heritage and identity. By improving access to the river, the project has helped people reconnect with this important local asset and create new traditions alongside established ones.
Activity, health and leisure
The launch has made it easier, safer and more enjoyable for people of all ages and abilities to participate in outdoor activities. By reducing barriers to access, the facility has encouraged more people to try kayaking, canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding, promoting active lifestyles and improving physical health and wellbeing. The accessible design has enabled people with mobility challenges to experience the benefits of being on the water, while the larger launch area allows more participants to be active at the same time. The project has also helped foster social wellbeing and confidence through initiatives such as LOPC Wild Women, our women's outdoor community which now has around 200 members. In 2026, over 100 women attended our "She Retreat" camping event, creating opportunities for friendship, adventure and mutual support. At a time when many people face increasing pressures on their physical and mental wellbeing, the kayak launch continues to provide a place where people can connect with nature, challenge themselves and experience the joy of being active outdoors.
