The idea

Kamehameha - AniManga Lab is a 12-session creative workshop series designed to support young people's and young adults' mental health through manga and anime storytelling. The project will engage two age groups—11–18 and 18–25—in structured workshops tailored to their needs.

Participants will learn manga illustration techniques, character design, and storytelling, using art as a tool for self-expression and emotional resilience. The sessions will foster creativity, confidence, and communication skills in a fun and supportive environment.

The workshops will culminate in a community showcase, where participants will present their work, celebrate their achievements, and connect with others who share their passion.

By providing separate sessions for teenagers and young adults, the project ensures that activities are engaging, relevant, and accessible for all skill levels. We will offer a platform to build confidence, manage mental health, and explore a future in creative industries.

What we'll deliver

  • 12 manga & anime workshops for ages 11–18 and 18–25, tailored to each group's needs.
  • High-quality art materials like sketchbooks, manga pens, and markers for participants.
  • Guided lessons on manga drawing, character design, panel layout, and storytelling.
  • A final community showcase where participants exhibit and share their manga work.
  • Printed zines or digital books compiling participants' manga stories.
  • A welcoming creative space in a community venue, library, or shopping centre.
  • Marketing & outreach efforts to engage schools, community groups, and young creatives.
  • An evaluation report summarizing project impact and participant feedback.

Why it's a great idea

Kamehameha - AniManga Lab will provide a creative outlet for young people, using manga and anime to support mental well-being, self-expression, and confidence. The 12-session workshop series will allow participants to develop new skills, explore emotions, and connect with others in a structured and supportive environment.

The project benefits two age groups (11-18 and 18-25), offering tailored sessions to engage young people and young adults who may struggle with self-confidence, social isolation, or mental health challenges. It will also benefit local schools, families, and community spaces by providing an inclusive and accessible program.

Dartford and surrounding areas need more creative opportunities for young people to express themselves. Art and storytelling are proven tools for improving well-being and fostering a sense of community. The final community showcase will celebrate participants’ achievements and strengthen connections between young creatives, families, and local org
