Dear backers, Our crowdfunding campaign, launched in July 2019, set out to erect a statue of the playwright Joe Orton in his hometown of Leicester in collaboration with local partners including Leicester City Council. We received amazing support from the community throughout the campaign and we’d like to take the opportunity to thank you for your backing of the project. Unfortunately, previously pledged funding towards the campaign is no longer available for use in the delivery of the project, which therefore cannot proceed as originally conceived. Given the work that the team has put into this project, we are of course very disappointed by this outcome but we are able to offer 100% refunds of pledges made to the campaign. Despite incurring various problems that have delayed this project, the committee of the Joe Orton Statue Appeal is still working hard to achieve a statue of Joe Orton. We are meeting with Leicester City Council in a few weeks. If a statue proves to be no longer possible, we will explore alternative ways to memorialise Orton in Leicester. Thank you for your patience and continued support.
Hello. It's been several months since you kindly made a generous donation to the Joe Orton Statue Appeal, helping us to hit our target - an incredible achievement! In Spring 2020, your donation enabled us to invite artists to outline their vision of a memorial to Joe Orton. We received 27 exciting designs, from which we had planned to longlist about 10 and shortlist 3 later this year. However, with regret, after consultation with partners and stakeholders, plans to memorialise Joe Orton in Leicester have had to be postponed for one year due to the coronavirus crisis, just as projects all over the world have been delayed. We look forward to continuing our project as soon as possible and will keep you updated on our groundbreaking endeavour to celebrate the literary genius of Joe Orton. After an extraordinary 4 months of fundraising, the Joe Orton Statue Appeal will end today at midnight! Our success has been reported by the BBC online, BBC East Midlands Today and covered by BBC Radio Leicester and the Leicester Mercury. THANK YOU for your donation. Rewards for donations are listed on the Spacehive page under ‘Idea’ (scroll to the bottom). If you wish to claim a reward, please send us your address. And remember it’s not too late for friends & associates to pledge if they would like to join us in doing something amazing. So many people have expressed pride at being part of this project. One person said he feels involved in something historic. There’s still time for others to join us and be a Friend of Joe. All donors will be listed on a webpage about the statue. The next step is to start the commissioning process, working with the Public Monuments and Statues Association (PMSA). We will keep you posted on updates.
