Seeing clearly : How lighting can make London a better city
Centre for LondonSince the first lockdown we have experienced our common spaces in a different way during our daily walks. The focus on safe outdoor socialising and eating has led to much rethinking of the role and value of our public realm. As this report shows, the benefits for the environment, the wellbeing of Londoners, and the recovery of London’s businesses from the devastating COVID-19 pandemic, are waiting to be seized.

More about our impact
The environment
The lighting products recommended in the feasibility study are state of the art, low running costs and environmentally friendly with negligible light pollution to nearby residences The lighting engineers have also made a number of recommendations to the London Borough of Southwark regarding modifications to their existing street lighting provision. .
The local economy
The feasibility study in itself did not deliver any tangible outputs. However, the discussions with the lighting engineers and the lighting trials raised peoples awareness of new lighting technology which is energy efficient and less harmful to the environment.
Volunteering, jobs & education
The feasibility study and the resulting lighting trials demonstrated to people that 21C lighting is not harsh floodlighting but a subtle art form which enhances the architectural merits of a building. We were fortunate that the timing of the feasibility study coincided with the launch of Leo Villareal's Illuminated River project. People could appreciate and understand that the lighting of the bridges was computer controlled and did not generate light pollution.
Arts, culture & heritage
Rotherhithe Illuminated!'s feasibility study has not as yet produced any tangible outputs. However the very comprehensive light trials and demonstrations raised awareness of the architectural intricacies of a number of the buildings. It also addresses a number of aims and objectives of the Thames Vision and the Port of London Authority's ambition for the river over the next 20 years.
Activity, health and leisure
As stated as yet there are no tangible outputs.
