The idea
We aim to bring new life to the HUDAWI Cultural Centre, by creating a beautiful social memorial garden and improving the internal aesthetic look and design of the building to reflect its identity, to honour the inspirational community members from the past and the town’s African-Caribbean heritage.
Located in the heart of Huddersfield, the HUDAWI Cultural Centre has long been a cornerstone for community gatherings, cultural celebration and social progress. Today, it needs care and renewal.
With your help, the HUDAWI Consortium will transform the interior and transform the outdoor space into a vibrant, accessible memorial garden which will be a place for reflection, celebration, and connection.
Our project leaders will endeavor to promote interconnectedness of the Huddersfield community by welcoming organisations, local skilled workers and individuals keen to develop their skills and knowledge through this project.
Some of the paintings shown are from one of our local artists.
What we'll deliver
- Internal decoration of community rooms for events, classes, and local organisations
- Development of an outdoor HUDAWI Garden with floral displays and seating areas
- We will prioritise the internal decoration, as it will create the first impression
- The gardening project will start in the Springtime
- This will be the first phase of a planned program of work
Why it's a great idea
The HUDAWI Cultural Centre (HCC) is one of Huddersfield’s most significant cultural landmarks, representing decades of African-Caribbean community spirit. Restoring it will preserve heritage whilst providing a much-needed social, cultural and wellbeing hub for local residents.
HCC will deliver social, environmental & economic benefits to the community by transforming the exterior/interior of the building into a vibrant/welcoming space. Through landscaping, reconstruction and internal aesthetic improvements, we aim to create an environment that attracts local residents, organisations and visitors to the centre.
HCC will enhance social interaction that build stronger community connections and pride. Providing an accessible and inclusive environment leading to improved social wellbeing and decreased isolation/loneliness.
Attractive community buildings are more likely to be well used over time & contribute to the community's longterm success, leading to improvements in quality of life.
