The idea
It is a fact that at least one in 20 veterans returning from the armed forces find it difficult to access employment and are homeless for six months or more. H2H will up-skill the veterans, supporting them in a practical environment, getting the opportunity to learn specific trades e.g. joinery.
H2H will ultimately enable the veterans to have easier access to employment, have the foundation to develop a career in a chosen field or to progress as a potential team leader/ trainer to work with other veterans on similar projects.
H2H will have a positive impact on the ex-service families who will live in the properties, providing a safe and secure environment.
H2H will also make a big difference to the people living in the local community of Pleasley Mansfield, bringing back into use abandoned properties and re-developing a once thriving, mining community where people were proud to live.
This is the first project of its kind in the country.
What we'll deliver
- Provide the veterans with an NVQ qualification at the end of the project.
- The veterans will renovate the next 2 derelict houses on Hillmoor Street into homes for ex-service families
Why it's a great idea
H2H builds confidence and a sense of comradeship as the veterans are renovating homes for fellow veterans in need.
H2H renovates structurally sound derelict properties and brings them back into use - many of which have stood empty for over 20 years.
H2H provides housing for ex-services families at risk of homelessness.
H2H rebuilds communities in streets where there have been empty homes for many years.
Steps to get it done
- Through donations of materials and sponsorship
Ex-service families will rent the properties at an affordable rate, matched with local social housing rates.
