Help school students share their views

We are helping schools in Shropshire to air student views through a dedicated radio magazine show that will empower them to gain confidence and tackle issues in their schools and communities.

This project has reached its fundraising target. It has also activated Continuous Fundraising, which means you can still donate and support the project.

The idea

We are helping schools to cultivate essential life skills such as communication, problem-solving, and adaptability through the use of broadcast media and a specialist radio show specifically for schools to air student views on a range of topics that are important to them.
Any school in Shropshire Telford and Wrekin can provide content for the show that our volunteers will master and compile.
This pilot project will provide a platform for your school to have their voice on air which will empower students to gain confidence and tackle issues in their schools and communities.
It will engage young people in modern and real-world thinking, they'll learn from others and be able to take action in their schools and communities.
At the core they will learn about a wide range of issues through discussions that affect them and use that knowledge to record their opinions that we air through a dedicated weekly school radio show that people can listen to through our website or app.

What we'll deliver

  • Producing a dedicated school radio show
  • Featuring school opinions from across the county
  • Atracting further volunteers to work within our Darwin Shopping Centre studio
  • Purchasng additional production equipment
  • Liaising with local schools to explain how to compile, record audio that we can use
  • To implement processes for schools to send their audio, for us to master and slot into the radio show

Why it's a great idea

• Provision of a community radio show to excite, educate and engage young people that is not available in Shropshire
• Encourage student collaboration, discussion and resolving opinions
• Engage and empower young people
• A safe place for young people to voice opinions
• Understanding what matters in local communities and what other communities are experiencing by comparison
• Understanding what impact they can have in their schools and communities
• Alignment to school purposes, the national curriculum, iteracy and oracy
• Further opportunities for volunteers, education and jobs

Steps to get it done

  • • Contact schools directly with the radio opportunity
  • • Schedule training sessions to teachers in our studio - how to record and send audio, agree on schedules
  • • Set initial project to be received within 2 weeks and send pre-agreed schedule
  • • Send tutors links to video 'How To' support for reference
  • • Feedback on first audio file received
  • • Edit, produce and schedule first audio within new student magazine show
  • • Notify of show using email marketing, PR and social media sharing
  • • Create podcast from audio sent that be listened to as a catch up show

We believe it's important that young people heave their voices heard. With almost 25% of 0 to 15 year olds in Shropshire Telford and Wrekin living in income deprived households, we need to create unique opportunities for young people to gain valuable experience to help show that they are important and our opinions and understanding matters, they can shape who they become and the communities they live in.
