More about our impact
The environment
Grow Hexham saw local people accessing and eating locally produced food with the surplus going to the Community Grocery, which already sources surplus food from supermarkets. This project reduces food miles, waste and the environmental impact of importing food. The range of plots and gardens and activities are contributing to plant and environmental diversity and a reduction in mono cultural farming and the use of pesticides. The recycling of tools and implements, and the sharing of seeds and plants, is reducing the need for new tools to be made and plants grown. A composting workshop has been held at number 28. Grow Hexham is currently looking a spare land that can be developed as community gardens.
The local economy
We have created a part-time post which will continue for another year, as well as reducing the cost of food to people who need it and reducing the cost of importing or transporting food to the environment.
Volunteering, jobs & education
The project has relied on volunteers from number 28, The local youth group, Hexham Community Partnership and gardeners. One job has been filled at Number 28 by a Grow Hexham applicant who was offered the post as a result of her interest in Grow Hexham.
Arts, culture & heritage
The project involved poster making, music, sculpting and cooking, A herb workshop resulted in herb and flower syrup making and making herb teas.
Activity, health and leisure
Grow Hexham is based on personal, social and environmental, well-being. Gardening, making, eating well and having fun are the cornerstones of this project
