The idea

School of You is a community interest company passionate about emotional health and inclusion through creative, holistic approaches. Our therapeutic workshops blend art, movement, reflection and psychoeducation to help people feel calm, connected and confident. Previous workshops for adults with additional needs, older adults and marginalised communities were fully booked, with overwhelmingly positive feedback. Many described the experience as “life-changing,” “relaxing,” and even “saved my life.” This project will expand our reach by providing access to free or subsidised wellbeing sessions for all, but with particular focus across Lancashire for SEND adults, isolated older people and underrepresented groups. We also aim to strengthen volunteer pathways for counselling and mental health trainees by offering shadowing opportunities. Funding will support us to reach different communities and take us into spaces people already trust—like day centres, parks and community venues.

What we'll deliver

  • 64+ creative wellbeing sessions (free or low-cost) impacting 160 individuals
  • Creative resources (art materials, instruments, props)
  • Development of a volunteer reflective practice resource
  • Celebratory community events to bring people together and showcase outcomes
  • Monitoring and evaluation to inform and strengthen future delivery and sustainability

Why it's a great idea

This project will ensure adults who need emotional, sensory or creative support can access it without financial or social barriers. Our activities reduce anxiety, improve self-esteem and provide emotional release in a safe, supportive setting. We focus on inclusion, reaching underserved groups such as adults with SEND, carers, isolated older people and those from marginalised backgrounds. Sessions are sensory-informed, trauma-aware and tailored to individual needs. We’re also growing a small team of volunteers, and through Simone’s links with Nelson Colne College, hope to offer mental health and counselling students future volunteering opportunities to gain insight into creative wellbeing. It also strengthens community connection, reduces isolation, and builds a foundation for sustainable future delivery, funding bids, and long-term impact.

Steps to get it done

  • Continue delivering creative wellbeing sessions with existing facilitators, based on available budget
  • Maintain support from current NCCG volunteers and gradually involve more trainee counsellors or mental health students
  • Develop community links further, particularly with groups representing diverse cultural and generational backgrounds
  • Plan for growth or extension based on available resources, focusing on core aims of inclusion, creativity, and wellbeing
