The idea
We're excited to have been given the go ahead by GTR to plant up the unused and barren patch of land on platform two. Our plan is to fill this space with drought-tolerant, pollinator-friendly plants, creating a haven for local biodiversity that will add to the green corridor work we are creating in the local area.
The starting fund provided by GTR is £500. Unfortunately, this budget won't stretch far, and that's why we're reaching out to the community to support this project.
The land is on a slant, and so needs terracing. It is also a deceivingly large space, and we want to fill it with plants that can handle this tough environment.
What we'll deliver
- A vibrant terraced garden on platform two, full of colours and scents, providing a haven for bees and butterflies
- Monthly maintenance, ensuring the garden provides interest all year round.
Why it's a great idea
Beautifying the platform will have the added benefit of bringing colour to the train station, providing passengers with a year round display.
Open Orchard Project will encourage local people to take part in the creation of this garden, helping cultivate a sense of shared connection through urban nat. We will then maintain the garden on a monthly basis, with the support of our amazing volunteers.
Steps to get it done
- Preparing the land for planting by removing rubble and rubbish, and adding soil improvers.
- Terracing the area with the use of logs to keep soil in place and also provide homes for wildlife.
- Plant drought tolerant flowers, grasses, shrubs and ground cover plants, with mulch to retain moisture.
