The idea
The towpath on the Grand Union Canal, between Great Western Road and Harrow Road is overshadowed by the A40 Westway along a stretch around 100m long. The space is sad and unloved, and feels cold and threatening. We propose to improve it by introducing facilities for the local community which will generate regular activity in the area. We asked local residents, canal boaters, joggers, young adults, families with young children and towpath users what they would like to see there. The photographs of their fantastic suggestions will be displayed throughout June in the Great Western Studios as part of the London Festival of Architecture. The most popular ideas proposed were: - an outdoor exercise for all ages - a playground - planting - to install a tap for the canal boaters We believe that these facilities will transform this area to make it a destination. The varied facilities will benefit a large number of people and provide an opportunity to bring together the local community.
What we'll deliver
- Carry out a survey of the Utilities - power, water supply, drainage etc in the area
- Continue the momentum in order to advance the Urban Park to its next stage
- Engage with the community for feedback as the feasibility study develops
- Commission a full feasibility study to show what the Urban Park will look like and how much it will cost.
- Develop the idea with the Canal and River Trust and Westminster Council and make a pre-planning application
Why it's a great idea
The Urban Park will transform a currently hostile and unloved section of the Grand Union Canal towpath into a thriving new area. An exercise area for all ages will help the whole community, from children to seniors. The water tap will be a benefit to the Canal boaters, whose presence in turn will add animation and activity to the area. Some of the exercise elements could generate power which will be a fun way to stay motivated about getting fit, and increase the knowledge and awareness of energy issues. We need a feasibility study to generate a Concept Design and to cost it. We want to consult further with the Landowner and the Council, and we want to discuss further with the local community.
Steps to get it done
- We will commission a professional feasibility study in order to produce a Concept Design for the Urban Park
- We will commission a Quantity Surveyor to provide a detailed costing of the Urban Park
- We will host workshops with the community to gain feedback on the proposed design for the Park
- We will liaise with Infrastructure providers for information regarding the power and water supply
- We will liaise with Network rail to discuss any alterations to the boundary wall
- We will liaise with the Westway Trust to discuss the project
- We will liaise with Westminster Council and the Canal and River Trust to address planning permission and land ownership
