More about our impact
The environment
We have turned an unused space into a vibrant community asset. We have reused and recycled materials as much as possible. For instance, we bought second-hand tables from a restaurant that was closing. We bought kitchen equipment form a nearby cafe that was closing. We bought old church pews instead of buying new materials to make benches. We used the old curtains and turned them into comfortable padded seat cushions for the church pews. We cleaned and upcycled the old wall lights.
The local economy
We created volunteering opportunities for between 10 and 20 people. This was beneficial to retired people who wanted to meet others, use their existing skills and do something good for the community. We offered volunteering opportunities to 6 young people with additional needs. This has given them confidence and has increased their skills, which they will add to their CVs. We have created 1 full time manager job and 8 part-time jobs. We have created cafe work volunteering opportunities for up to 10 volunteers. We are using local suppliers to help the local economy. We are aiming to generate profit which will help keep the community centre alive.
Volunteering, jobs & education
We have created 1 full-time manager job plus 6 part-time jobs. We have created cafe volunteer opportunities. From September we aim to offer supported volunteer opportunities to young people with additional needs.
Arts, culture & heritage
We display old history books about Banks in the cafe alongside books of Lancashire dialect poems written by local people. We have a heritage "graffiti" wall of old Lancashire expressions.
Activity, health and leisure
We have a TV featuring a rolling screen of our community centre's programme of activities and social events. We managed to get funding to put on free summer holiday activities for local children, with 150 children attending each of the events, plus 100 parents. The aim was to get children off their screens and devices and get them into being fit and active instead.
