The idea
Gt Harwood Rovers was established in 1975 and has been serving the community for nearly five decades.
The Hyndburn 2022 profile highlights Year 6 students in Netherton and Overton, the two wards that make up Gt Harwood, as two of the top five areas in Hyndburn for child obesity, at 42.4% and 41.5%, respectively.
We want to transport the kids from the local schools and bring them to the club so we can encourage these youngsters to get active. School budgets are tight, which means they cannot afford transportation. Considering a one-hour PE lesson, it makes it very difficult for students to arrive and leave by bus within that timeframe. Providing transportation would allow us to get these local kids to our football club so they can engage with the sport. This would enable us to provide access to the sport and increase participation for all, including girls, culturally diverse communities and inactive children.
What we'll deliver
- • Fully accessible door-to-door transport to fit in around School PE lessons
- • A team of volunteers to oversee the fun football sessions
Why it's a great idea
• Opportunity for school students to get involved in football
• Tackle the obesity rate by getting our kids active
• Encourage more children to join the club so they can continue to keep fit
• Increase participation for primary and secondary children in the community
Football is physically demanding and promotes fitness. It teaches cooperation and teamwork, develops discipline, improves social skills, teaches sportsmanship, enhances mental resilience, and promotes physical fitness and fun. With your help, we will be able to provide local children with the opportunity to experience football and its many benefits, which they may not otherwise have, so hopefully, many will go on to join the club.
Steps to get it done
- • Promote the event to different classes each term at all the primary schools in Gt Harwood
- • Secure and organise minibus
- • Organise attendees
- • Book and arrange set up
- • Reach out and secure volunteers
This project will enable local youngsters in Gt Harwood to take part in football, get active, and enjoy the many benefits it has to offer.
