Over 15 weeks we will provide 105 online yoga and relaxation and fitness training sessions to help support the mental health and wellbeing of young people aged 12 to 25 as they cope with COVID-19.
The project we are proposing is in response to the Covid-19 Pandemic and the widely acknowledged impact it is having on the mental health and emotional wellbeing of many young people who are becoming anxious, depressed and feel socially isolated. Over an initial period of fifteen weeks we wish to provide online, 105 yoga and relaxation and fitness training sessions which will enable young people aged 12 to 25 to experience the many benefits of physical exercise to both their mental and physical health. Young people will be able to access the sessions live on Zoom and/or access the same sessions stored on our website. Parents are concerned that young people are not able to participate in many of their usual activities and are concerned at the amount of time young people are spending in sedentary ‘screen’ activities and so our proposals to increase physical activity will please them. People are today aware that physical exercise has benefits for mental and physical health.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Our project will provide support for young people experiencing mental health and wellbeing issues - whether pre-existing or as an outcome of the current pandemic. Young people who are missing their usual activities and who are spending more time alone will enjoy the ‘mood-lifting’ benefits of exercise. Yoga and relaxation techniques will help them to relax and deal with feelings of anxiety. Where young people develop their own strategies for dealing with stress and anxiety - for example engaging in sport or exercise - this could reduce the chance of developing further mental health problems which require treatment, or which have a life-altering impact. This project will also raise the profile of our charity and the US offer allowing more young people experiencing mental health issues to benefit from our support.

Our new project ‘Get Online, Get Active’ has launched and our FREE online yoga and fitness classes start on Monday 15th February 2021, running for 15 weeks. The timetable runs across the week, and there are sessions available for 12 -16, 16 - 18 and 18 - 25 year olds. We’ve tried to keep it simple; all the young person (or their parent / carer) needs to do is go to our website www.usactive.org.uk/goga, view the timetable… book onto sessions…and find out about our talented and vetted coaches. The classes will be held on ZOOM, and once you book an email will be sent with a link to join the class. US supports young people to improve their mental health through sport and exercise; as the COVID pandemic continued we secured funding through Spacehive crowdfunding and the North of Tyne Combined Authority to offer 15 weeks of online sessions to support more young people in these uncertain and unsettling times. Thank you for so much for helping US achieve this milestone, and for supporting the wellbeing of our young people! Alongside ‘Get Online, Get Active’ we continue to accept new referrals of young people requiring more personalised programmes of exercise and fitness to support mental wellbeing. Referral forms or enquiries can be emailed to [email protected] Please, Please share this information and the link with your friends, family, colleagues and any online or social media platforms to which you have access - as we’d love as many young people as possible to benefit from the project! Don't hesitate to get in touch with US if you have any questions. The US Team
