The idea
To make the toilets gender neutral, we think the first for a church in Doncaster. To make a dedicated disabled toilet with baby change facilities and all toilets to be gender neutral in separate units to include hand washing facilities in each unit. Each unit to be completely enclosed to ensure total privacy. There will be safety locks so access can be gained from the outside in an emergency.
The toilets will be situated so they can be accessible from different rooms enabling different groups to meet at the same time.
We want the building to be updated to provide community groups with somewhere to meet locally without having to travel out of the area.
We have already held an open day for the community and have ideas from them, as to what they would like the building to be used for - we can't wait to make it all a reality with your help.
What we'll deliver
- An accessible gender neutral toilet block
- Bring the local community together
- Enable people with disabilities to meet with able bodied without predjudice
Why it's a great idea
The church has plenty of meeting rooms and is on one level. Due to the present poor toilet facilities it is limiting in its use. Our plan is to encourage the local community to use the building to meet socially, make friends and not feel isolated. We have a unit that houses men with learning disabilities and they have told us they want to meet with ‘ordinary people’ play games and listen to music.
We have done many things to improve the building, the one thing holding us back is the toilets. The units will be big enough to support more than one person being in them to support anyone who needs help when visiting the toilet.
Steps to get it done
