The idea
Within the next six months we will have locals accessing our permaculture natural community allotment area growing vegetables, flowers, and fruit both for themselves but also to support our local foodbanks with excess produce. We will have an orchard, creating a beautiful tranquil space where people can relax and use our picnic benches looking out over the stunning views of the Severn Valley. We will have a rewilding area supporting nature to take back a small space as well as having a winding art path joining all the pieces together. Wildlife is a key part of what we want people to enjoy, and our beautifully landscaped pond and wildlife garden will allow our community to connect with nature in a huge variety of ways in a local proximity. The area will be fenced, and then native hedges will be planted to encourage birds, bees and butterflies as well as lots more flora and fauna. An amazing location for our community to improve their physical and mental health and make friends.
What we'll deliver
- Develop a pond and wildlife area
- Make a set of allotment beds for the wider community
- Create an orchard and picnic area
- Fabricate an art trail linking each area together
- Produce food for local foodbanks
- Cultivate a rewilding area
- Constructing a fenceline which will incorporate natural, native hedging
Why it's a great idea
The local community will have a space they can access that will allow them to develop gardening skills in a permaculture environment. The other areas will allow us to support schools and local groups such as scouts and guides to develop knowledge and access green spaces. As a green space it will allow our neighbourhood to come together, increasing people's social interaction and removing more of the isolation that has been so prevalent since Covid. Providing adults and children with a sense of purpose and community, working together to achieve a high level of produce that can support their own families, but also those who rely on foodbanks to have meals on a regular basis. Green spaces are well known to improve people's mental wellbeing, but the impact will be greater as it will also help physical fitness as well as providing a space for friendships to form. Native wildlife species will be able to flourish and ecosystems will naturally be formed.
