More about our impact
The environment
This project helped participants find confidence in cycling, which in turn, led to more frequent use of bicycles as a means of getting around, day to day. People taking part also reported a new feeling of connection to nature, having spent time (sometimes for the first time) in the wild places and woodlands of Kent. In turn, young people reported feeling heightened awareness, concern, and action for local, regional, national, and global environment issues. We also saved hundreds of items of sportwear from landfill thanks to the relationship we were able to build with Pre-Loved Sportswear CIC. The price of sportswear is often a barrier for many young people, so we were able to A. supply participants with free kit, and B. help reduce waste, for which the sports industry is hugely responsible for.
The local economy
We maintained our equipment such as bikes with local businesses. When we needed extra coaches and leaders we used local people in the fitness industry. When we climbed, we climbed at F51 / The Sports Trust. When we needed to hire pitches and sports facilities we used Three Hills Sports, Folkestone.
Volunteering, jobs & education
This project helped participants get involved in conservation and rewilding projects in Kent, where they gained skills and knowledge that's inspired them to think about potential careers in conservation. Others have been inspired to work toward gaining qualifications in the health and fitness industry.
Arts, culture & heritage
Part of our project included bike and running tours to local art and street art installations / sites, for which Folkestone is becoming famous (the Banksy re-homed on The Old High Street, for example). We also worked with a local artist in Folkestone on doodle art workshops, which proved popular.
Activity, health and leisure
Everyone who took part in this project has improved their health and fitness in one way or another. Forming healthy habits that range from weekly participation in local parkruns, through to completing marathons. Others made a habit of cycling, climbing, or simply walking further than they ever did before, immersed in nature. All of this is founded on the inspiration, leadership and mentorship David was able to provide, through his own story. But just as importantly, perhaps even more so, is how David is still developing himself as an athlete with aspirations. Inspiration is nothing without aspiration. It is easy to be inspired, but we need something to aspire to. Something that is difficult, but reachable.
