Abdul Mageed Educational Trust (AMET) is committed to supporting learning, education and awareness raising in UK and Africa. We endeavour to facilitate and provide platforms for professionals and specialists to educate and raise the awareness of the Arab and African communities here and abroad. We are based in Westminster particularly church street area where we use the Derry Hall and Greenside community centre.
The Charity’s main objectives as listed in the constitution are:
- to advance education in African and Arab communities in the UK and in Sudan; including by running or facilitating educational workshops and by making grants to educational establishments to support economically disadvantaged students;
(2) to develop the capacity and skills of members of the Arab and African communities who are socially and economically disadvantaged in the UK in such a way that they are better able to identify, and help meet, their needs and to participate more fully in society.
In 2019 We ran 9 workshops on health and wellbeing funded by Westminster Adult Education Service. During the session of living well on a budget the participants highlighted the need for a cooperative to shop collectively from wholesale markets and distribute amongst members with low cost.
Following those recommendations, we launched the Sunflower cooperative on 28 August 2019. We paid visits to wholesale markets and chosen the Western International Market in Hays as a beginning. We delivered boxes full of fruits for 5 pounds and boxes full of vegetables for £5. Those who require large quantities can order medium or large boxes. The experience was successful, and we now have 27 Members of the cooperative. WE started with a grant from Tesco Bags for help.
In 2020 we won funding from the community fund awards for all National lottery to deliver the project African heritage and Economic Empowerment which included 9 workshops about African history, Economic empowerment and cooperatives, Cultural intelligence body and mind and spirituality, Arts, crafts and candle making Three Family enterprise Sundays when community come together to shop and sell their products, and the Sunflower cooperative fruit and vegetables supply. We have a track record.
