Enabling markets for Mill Hill

Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum By Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum

Mill Hill Broadway’s ample pavement space is crying out for activation but requires an enabling environment. This project would make it ready for dual use and host an exciting calendar of events.

Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.

Mill Hill has long, wide pavements that are ideal for hosting markets. The local residents are keen to see the Broadway enlivened with visiting markets and other cultural events. The funding would pay for the installation of feeder pillars, market promotion and publicity, and project management.

What we'll deliver:

  • Hire a project manager to oversee installation and plan calendar of visiting markets
  • Install feeder pillars for power
  • Promote visiting markets with quality publicity materials

Why it's a great idea:

Mill Hill Broadway does not have a town square where local people can come together to enjoy events. By updating the High Street with infrastructure to support visiting markets, the project will give people a usable community space. A more active high street will help improve footfall in the town centre and create broader appeal. The markets will also complement the retail offer in the Broadway by providing products such as baked goods, a fish monger, flowers, and a greengrocer. By activating the Broadway and bringing in a specialist retail offer, we hope to improve local people's enthusiasm for their town centre.

Steps to get it done:

  • Appoint a project manager to oversee the project
  • Appoint contractor for installation work
  • Contract markets to visit Mill Hill
  • Publicise events during the year
  • Agree calendar of visiting markets within Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum
  • Pay for permits and licenses as required
  • Review footfall and satisfaction among visitors after each event
  • Source and cost feeder pillars and toilets
  • Work with Barnet Council to agree installation of feeder pillars and toilets

This project is part of a wider vision by the Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum to improve Mill Hill Broadway. One of the Forum's key objectives is to ensure the area has the ability to compete commercially and flourish as an attractive neighbourhood into the future. The Forum is keen to work with other resident groups and businesses to help secure a more vibrant future for the town centre. The London Borough of Barnet approved the group’s planning applications for Area and Forum designation in September 2014.
