The idea
We will transform an vacant area of land at the rear of a social housing estate into a thriving new community space in Rotherhithe, SE16. The project will feature a wellbeing garden, food growing, a carpentry workshop, arts and crafts and, skills development opportunities run by ourselves and friends of the project.
The site will have polytunnel frames and raised planter beds to support food growing workshops for local residents and are being designed and built by Store Projects to make them accessible for able-bodied and disabled users.
Also on the site is a shipping container which has been adapted into a wood workshop. We will deliver carpentry and DIY skills workshops for local residents. It will be a chance for people to increase their confidence and to provide access for other employment and training opportunities.
There are also plans to introduce a product range and these will be sold at community festivals and fetes with the proceeds reinvested in to the project.

Why it's a great idea
1. There will be a nice place in the community for people to relax, join in with volunteering and workshops, or simply have a cup of tea and a chat.
2. The project will bring a green, vibrant and positive presence to the Silverlock estate.
3. The workshops will support people improving their confidence and help them find new interests and employment opportunities.
4. We will be teaching people how to grow and follow the journey of their own food to the dinner table
Our project will primarily benefit:
1. Residents of the Silverlock social housing estate, which serves around 3,000 people.
2. Rotherhithe Primary School pupils
3. Silverlock Medical Centre patients
4. 8 to 24 year olds from Southwark Young Carers
5. 15-18 year olds from NCS The Challenge
Edible Rotherhithe is also needed to help address high levels of unemployment, obesity and a lack of green space in the area.
Steps to get it done
- Build a new food growing garden for Rotherthithe with polytunnels and raised planter beds with disabled access
- Recruiting a paid tutor to deliver carpentry and D.I.Y. workshops
- Purchase tools and equipment for food growing
- Create a new community space with seated areas for an outdoor cinema/theatre space and story telling
- Deliver carpentry, D.I.Y., and food growing workshops
There has been considerable consultation and research by Edible Avondale with local community partners and stakeholders. We have met with Silverlock Hall Tenants and Residents Association, and local ward councillors, who fully support the project.
