Our old inflatable SIB boat is irreparable, and replacing it is crucial to continuing our conservation work. Pennywort spreads rapidly, but manual removal and composting can control it once large infestations are cleared.
We have chosen the Roto-Tech S40 for its stability, safer access, and aft hulls that protect the outboard. Designed for shallow rivers, it is durable, recyclable, and built to last over 30 years. Our current low-cost SIB needs constant repairs, slowing work, so investing in a robust boat will make conservation safer, faster, and more accessible. If funding falls short, we will consider quality second-hand or ex-demo options.
This funding will secure a long-lasting boat. We already use a solar-charged electric outboard and a floating platform to collect pennywort.
Funding will enable us to:
• Remove pennywort, improving water quality and supporting native species
• Compost removed plants for Long Wall Ecology Garden’s orchard
• Provide community access to the river
What we'll deliver:
- Regular pennywort gathering sessions
- Reduce pennywort growth by 50% over 3 years
- Create compost for the community orchard
- Community boat trips on the river
Why it's a great idea:
Pennywort has increased drastically on the Channelsea River during our six years working on site. It depletes oxygen levels and light for photosynthesis, threatening fish, invertebrates, and out-competing native water plants.
Expert consultations and national campaigns highlight the significant threat posed by floating pennywort in UK waters, with management costs exceeding £25 million annually (EA, Oct 2024).
Both Nick Bertrand (Creekside Discovery Centre) and Thames 21 have identified tackling pennywort as essential for increasing river biodiversity.
The UK has lost over 50% of its biodiversity since the 1970s, placing it in the worst global 10% - everything we can do to support nature to flourish will improve waterway resilience and help the area withstand climate change impacts.
With a new boat we will have all the equipment needed to tackle the pennywort growth, improving the biodiversity, supporting vital fish populations and plant growth.
Steps to get it done:
- Purchasing a quality second hand boat
