The idea

Walsall Bereavement Support Service is embarking on a transformative journey to create peer support spaces that serve as sanctuaries for diverse communities grappling with grief. With your invaluable support, we aim to curate environments where individuals from various backgrounds can converge, share their stories, and draw strength from each other's resilience. Your generous funding will be allocated towards establishing safe and welcoming spaces equipped with essential resources, trained facilitators, and supportive materials. Through these peer support spaces, we aspire to foster healing, cultivate hope, and empower individuals to navigate the complexities of grief with solidarity and compassion. The aim is then for those who have developed the skills and resilience and are at a stage in their grief journey that they feel comfortable to facilitate groups, we will ensure they are appropriately trained to run such spaces themselves. This results in peer support spaces multiplying.

What we'll deliver

  • Create bespoke bereavement peer support spaces
  • Training members of the community to become peers
  • Targeting communities where traditional counselling services don't reach

Why it's a great idea

Firstly, these spaces will serve as vital hubs of connection and solidarity, offering individuals a platform to share their grief experiences and find solace in the understanding and empathy of others. By fostering a sense of belonging and companionship, these peer support spaces will alleviate feelings of isolation and loneliness commonly experienced by those navigating the journey of grief.

Moreover, these spaces will facilitate the exchange of coping strategies and resilience-building techniques, empowering participants with practical tools to navigate the challenges of bereavement. Through mutual support and shared wisdom, individuals will gain insights into effective self-care practices and develop adaptive coping mechanisms to navigate their grief journey with greater resilience and strength. This will support communities where talking about death is stigmatised, resulting in more intra and inter community support across Walsall.
