The environment

The environment

Now situated in a brand new paddock which was previously unused grassland and completely overgrown, the donkeys grazing can now further increase the areas vegetation species' diversity. They eat a wide variety of plants and happily take out the coarser more dominant species that can outcompete herbs and fine grasses. This can allow for botanical diversity in the area, creating a range of conditions for different species to establish and thrive.

The local economy

The local economy

All contractors used on the project were based locally. Moving on from this, our Bluebell Cafe which many of our residents, staff and the local public use, purchases it products from local businesses.

Volunteering, jobs & education

Volunteering, jobs & education

Covid is currently having a negative effect on our ability to provide these opportunities at this time. We would normally provide volunteering opportunities within all of our services, this could mean, supporting a resident to visit the donkeys or supporting someone to be involved in the everyday care of our animals which is part of an existing educational programme onsite. In addition to this and when possible, our plans are to involve local schools with an opportunity to take part in caring for our animals.

Arts, culture & heritage

Arts, culture & heritage

An important part of Aspens culture and heritage is to provide the people we support with the opportunity to be involved with and care for animals. The donkeys are an integral part of this and having the new accessible stable and paddock ensures that this can continue.

Activity, health and leisure

Activity, health and leisure

Whether a resident or a visitor to our site, we provide all with the opportunity to enjoy our Woodland Walk, Children's Activity Area, Outdoor Gym, and to meet the animals that live within our community. Now whatever mobility issues they may have they can also spend time with our four donkeys and enjoy all of the wonderful outdoor space available to them.
