Down Ampney playground has been a vital amenity for village families, and those from the surrounding area, for the past 20 years – and the surface is showing its age. We desperately need to resurface the play area so that it is safe, after a RoSPA report last year said it was medium risk and the surface has deteriorated further since then.
The play area is well-used by children of all ages, as we have equipment for toddlers from 18 months to two years old, and another area with equipment for juniors aged five to 14. It is located next to the village shop, tennis courts and the village primary school, and is part of the fabric of family life in Down Ampney. If the playground is forced to close, then the impact on our community and the families who live in and around here would be huge.
We want to resurface with Playground Wet Pour, which is a surface that is safe, slip-resistant and non-abrasive.
Additional funds raised above the amount needed will go towards new play equipment.
What we'll deliver:
- A new, child-friendly, safety flooring will be laid enabling the playground to safely function
- Additional funds raised above the amount needed will go towards new play equipment to enhance the playground further.
Why it's a great idea:
Outdoor activities are vital to children’s health and wellbeing. Living in a village in the countryside does not guarantee that children have access to good quality outdoor space. If the playground is forced to close, some children may no longer have a safe outdoor space in which to play and it could deny them access to high-quality play equipment. Once the playground has been resurfaced, it will be able to continue to offer all children the safe space and equipment needed to nurture and expand their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. But the benefits of the resurfacing go further as the playground also helps other areas of the village to thrive. Our village shop is run by the community, and there are residents who depend on it as they do not have regular transport to take them to larger shops. But the shop only survives if it is well used. Families who come into the village to use the playground often visit our shop, helping to keep another vital village amenity going.
Steps to get it done:
- Instruct the chosen supplier to deliver the project
Any over-funding will be used to provide 2 or 3 items of new modern play equipment.
We also need time, enthusiasm, and different skills to help look after the playground. If you think you could lend a hand, by doing anything please do get in touch. We would love to hear from you.
