Doncaster Pride - Growing Diversity

Doncaster Pride - Growing Diversity

Jenny Dewsnap By Jenny Dewsnap

Doncaster Pride is growing, to expand to meet the needs of the community we have to move to a larger space. This means additional work, expense and effort and we need support to create our new vision

Doncaster Pride has delivered 13 annual events. In this time we've seen the community and the town change so much. We now want to grow the event to meet the needs of a growing and increasingly diverse audience. We want to add a special children and family area to the event and more specific support for the Trans community and also make changes to our accessibility with viewing areas, special quiet spaces and more facilities that cater for people with additional needs. To do all this requires a move - our current location isn't big enough to accommodate all the additional infrastructure that will be required. We know changes of this nature will require us to attract higher levels of sponsorship and to do this we have developed a new sponsorship strategy that we intend to roll out to business - this all requires designing too. So to help us grow, both physically and in terms of our own capacity to bring in the additional funds we need your help.

What we'll deliver:

  • A new location
  • A strategy to fund this growth through sponsorship and advertising
  • A family and children area
  • A more diverse offer that will cater for a more diverse audience
  • A wider community inclusion - Pride isn't just for the LGBT+ community

Why it's a great idea:

Pride is one of the biggest free events in Doncaster. It caters for the LGBT+ community but more than this it attracts an audience as diverse as our town. Pride is for everyone, there is no restriction for age, gender, sexuality, religion or ability and to further reinforce this message and educate we want to grow the event. We want Doncaster Pride to be able to provide more and grow to be fully inclusive, a beacon amongst other prides that cater only for the LGBT+ community. We believe community cohesion comes from joining together across all our communities and celebrating our similarities and not our differences. By enabling us to reach out to the business community to support our event through a brand new marketing and sponsorship campaign will mean we're sustainable moving forward and this funding would be used to help us to build capacity to grow way beyond 2020.

Steps to get it done:

  • deliver new marketing and sponsorship package
  • appoint specialist Trans advisor to work in the group
  • secure sponsors for children and family area

Pride in Doncaster is a volunteer led organisation and as such we don't have employees to work on our planning and delivery. We need to be able to support our volunteer board to develop and deliver more and better year on year. Their enthusiasm is unbelievable but the prospect of changing a model that has worked for the last 6 years to grow Pride and deliver on a new level is daunting - this funding would mean we can stage that growth and concentrate on developing the event this year as well as a funding strategy that will take us into the future. At the moment the team is looking at the usual fundraising efforts being changed as well as everything about the event too - this funding would certainly give breathing space on the all out funding requirement and mean from year 1 of the growth strategy we could achieve, morale needs this!

Overfunding

This project is enabled for overfunding. If the project hits its funding goal before the end of the campaign period, any extra funds raised will be spent (in order of priority) on:

  • We would use extra funds to add more specialist areas - so we aspire to deliver Children and Family, Disability viewing, Quiet space and Trans specialist space - more funds mean more spaces and more diverse offering for example a Teen Zone and second community stage providing a more diverse entertainment offer - the possibilities are endless.
