The idea
Our Allotment Project plays an essential role in supporting our members own wellbeing goals through its therapeutic programme 'Growing with Headway'. All of our members are brain injury survivors.
In 2018 we rented a neglected double plot and have worked hard to get it to where it is. It is our key meeting place where we grow fruit, veg and flowers as well as providing crafting and woodwork workshops. We support each other and have a lot of fun in the process.
Lockdown both highlighted and necessitated the need for our own porta-loo on our plot as the distance to the shared loos would take at least 20 minutes each way for one of our members to get there. It has been the best addition to our plot and members who were deterred by the previous loo arrangement now feel more confident to spend time on the plot.
We would not be able to deliver our wellbeing programme if we could not afford to pay for the hire of the loo. It is an essential requirement for our members and volunteers.
What we'll deliver
- rental of disabled portaloo and emptying service
Why it's a great idea
All of our members understand only too well that living life with an acquired brain injury can be extremely challenging. Loneliness and exclusion are commonplace and can be extremely detrimental to a persons health and wellbeing.
Our wellbeing programme has developed since 2018 and is a place that our members can call their own. They have all been instrumental in its development and it enables individuals to work towards their own wellbeing goals. Our volunteers and members have created a safe space where they feel included, can make friends and feel that they have a purpose. They learn new things, improve their fitness and above all they feel happy. The benefits of being in the fresh air and growing food are well documented. It has enabled us to develop a healthy eating programme and open up conversations around diet and exercise, which can be a challenging subject for many of our members. The greatest benefit of all is it is a safe space to be yourself and enjoy life.
