Headway Lancaster and Morecambe Bay is a small branch of the national brain injury charity, Headway UK . We are a volunteer group who are completely self-funding. We offer support and provide a social network to brain injury survivors, their families and carers. An acquired brain injury can occur as a result of a truama to the head through an accident or illness.
We focus on supporting our members physical and mental wellbeing via a number of projects which include, daytime drop ins, outdoor adventure weekends and our 'Growing with Headway' allotment project. 'Growing with Headway' provides a therapeutic green space for our community, enabling them to participate in and benefit from many of the physical and mental wellbeing outcomes associated with working in the natural environment.
Living with an acquired brain injury can make life extremely challenging. Most of our members are effected physically, mentally and emotionally. Many describe it as 'losing yourself and having to get to know a know a whole new you'. This in itself can be very distressing as a person has to cope with many challenging thoughts and feelings. Loss of speach, memory, sense of smell and taste, cognitve impairment, anger and depression. Exclusion and lonliness are common experiences as people often lose their jobs as well as their identity.
Having a place to go that gives you a sense of purpose, a safe place where there are others who understand where you are at, is vital to a persons self esteem. Once discharged from hospital, the services available to support you are very limited.
Our community group has been supporting survivors since 1981. Encouraging people to try new things, to come out of their comfort zones, to talk about how they are feeling, to be given the opportunity to make new friends and be with others. This is what we do. We suppport each other, we have fun and we enable people to grow in confidence and feel good about themselves.
