More about our impact
The local economy
Local businesses were given the opportunity to make an offer that was only available on the day in order to increase their footfall. Those that did so were included in the event programme. The the take-up by town centre businesses was low and this will require further work to develop enthusiasm for local events.
Volunteering, jobs & education
This event was the first physical event organised by The Dewsbury Partnership after working for some years to build an online presence. It demonstrated that the group has sufficient resources and capacity to connect to people and to have an impact on life in the town. We worked with professional artists and developed new relationships there and the volunteer and community groups who supported the event were enthusiastic and ready to repeat the exercise. This will be an ongoing effort which will build credibility year on year. We have already created a working relationship with other community groups with the intention of combining resources in future. Several members of other community groups participated as stewards in various roles , found new confidence in the responsibility placed in them and asked to be used again for future events. We has support from several youth community groups who provided adults who acted as stewards and cadets who helped with the event as well as showcasing their group. We hope to engage with a wider range of youth groups in future.
Arts, culture & heritage
We employed 6 professional acts although they all worked for dramatically lower 'mates rates' than normal for this community event. In addition we showcased 2 community majorettes groups, 2 dance academies and 2 musical contributions from school children as well as 7 school groups who turned up to sing for the finale. 12 schools took part in the creative arts lantern making workshops. In future we will be aiming to engage the creative arts work directly into the school curriculum in order to improve the attendance figure for schools.
Activity, health and leisure
By providing an event taking place in town on a Saturday afternoon we may have dragged some families away from the television screens for a few hours and contributed to the long term strategy for Dewsbury of generating an active leisure sector. By providing a broad range of entertainment of interest to diverse cultures we hope to have persuaded some people that Dewsbury is still a place where they can spend their leisure time to good effect.
