D-Lab have secured a lease for the Get Living marketing suite in East Village, Stratford E20. Help us transform it into an open access creative place to work, make, and learn for everyone in Newham!
D-Lab East will provide life changing opportunities for local businesses, freelancers, creatives, and young people in Newham. We’re fundraising to establish a new creative hub for everyone who wants to work, make, and learn on their doorstep. With full funding, as soon as next Spring you’ll be able to: * Launch or grow your business with affordable desk rental and access to industry mentors and regional support networks. *Innovate and experiment in a fully equipped makerspace including VR/AR, laser cutters, and industrial robotics. *Discover new skills with our creative technology workshops. *Support our outreach programs with local schools, community groups and the wider East London Community. We’ve secured the site, but now we need your help to make it one of the best equipped in the country so we can give everyone in Newham the opportunity to discover digital skills for the emerging creative economy. Invest in the future of your community and make a pledge today!
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
The creative economy is growing fast but opportunity in this emerging sector is hard to come by, and usually takes a fair bit of financial commitment. As a group of architects, designers, and technologists, we’ve been lucky enough to draw the long straws and now we want to support people who need a helping hand in these challenging industries. D-Lab is unlike any other co-working environment or makerspace. We’re a community interest company, meaning that profits from our desk rentals and memberships are returned into the community - enabling us to run innovative outreach programs curated and taught by our own versatile pool of industry leaders and members. With D-Lab East we’ll be able to support local business, freelancers, and young people with the space, tools, training, and opportunities they need to become local leaders in the creative sector. Help us make it happen - make a pledge, spread the word, and come and have a chat with us about how we can help the creative community.
Steps to get it done:
Until Spring, D-Lab Pop-Up will be open in Mirabelle Gardens - East Village, providing digital workshops and events and serving up tea to anyone who would like to come down and chat about the project and how we can best serve the local community. For more details check out the website and join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter.

Hello! We want our supporters to know that we are still working hard towards delivering our full project objectives in East London! We are currently working out of a great studio in the heart of East Village Stratford, which is providing presentation & teaching space plus clean digital fabrication equipment. We now excited to be finalising our agreements with our landlords for a new additional facility - where we can create & innovate with more mess using our heavy-duty making machines! Lots of connections have been made with local community groups and during Covid Lockdown we have been able to manufacture & distribute PPE visors to East London, including Barts NHS Trust hospitals , Foodbanks, Care Homes, Schools and other community groups. We have been busy! Our partners in this were AR18, Northchurch Baptist Church, and Epson UK who kindly donated time, money & boxes! We have kept our Mayor of London Crowdfunding team at GLA informed of where we are and hope to be able to update you soon with more progress as we go towards 'new normal' whatever that may look like! We continue to thank you for your support!
We are sorry that it has been a few months since you’ve heard from us and we wanted to let you know how our project is going. The larger building that we were hoping to move into, is on hold at the moment, due to construction issues, but the good news is that Get Living London are looking at other options for us on the site. (This means that we have not been able to buy all the machines yet with the allocated funds. They are being kept secure in an account for future use.) In the meantime we have been keeping busy in at our Pop-Up space in East Village E20, hosting NCS students for professional visit days and running events like Augmented Reality, Lego Architecture competitions, workshops, with an ‘electronics for beginners’ course starting in Sept 17th for 8 weeks. https://www.d-lab.co.uk/event/intro-to-practical-electronics-2 We are also regularly engaging with the local community and most recently have been at East London University in the Docklands, where we were inspired by 70 brilliant young women who we were speaking to about Design and Architecture of the future as part of the NCS Challenge programme. We’re so fortunate to have such an amazing group of people working at D-lab Studios who share a passion for social mobility and equality in the creative industries. We will keep you posted as things progress. Thank you for all your support.
Linda signing the paperwork last night at City Hall for our 30k Mayors Pledge for D-Lab East! We had a fun night celebrating with the other fab project leaders and getting advice from the knowledgeable GLA and Spacehive team. Thank you again to everyone who contributed - funds will start being released to us over the next couple of weeks so keep your eyes peeled for some amazing new equipment!
We are so grateful to all of you who have supported us during this campaign - A big thank you for your pledges, to those people that we know and to those anonymous guys who have also supported us! We have reached our target and are looking forward buying the equipment to make D-Lab East happen in the Spring. Do follow us on Social Media for more updates!
Brilliant news, thanks everyone!
Thank you to all of you who have helped us so far on this journey, we are so nearly there. We have 13 days left to find the final £6300 which will enable us to buy our new equipment for the community creative space :) The Lego Architecture club will soon be able to purchase more bricks!! Can you think of any businesses or individuals that might be able to help in any way. No pledge too small! Please share our link and spread the word. THANK YOU!
