We run gardening & nature workshops for disadvantaged/socially marginalised young people. We encourage youngsters to spend more time outdoors and discover their spark through extra-curricular activity
Green environments reduce levels of depression & anxiety and enhance quality of life. However, access to green space varies depending on socioeconomic background. The most economically deprived families have fewer opportunities to reap the benefits of time spent outdoors and this is contributing to rising levels of mental and physical health problems in young people. For the typical British young person, 1-5% of their time is spent outdoors. Worryingly, 3/4 children now spend less time outside than prisoners (1 hour) & children in low-income or ethnic minority communities have particularly limited access to natural spaces. We are going to change this by inspiring disadvantged young people to find their spark when taking part in outdoor extra-curricular activities. Our first project will educate and nurture through gardening & nature sessions at a beautiful, organic nursery in South Gloucestershire. School groups will visit us on a monthly basis & take part in our bespoke workshops.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Access to nature holds infinite possibilities; children gain cognitive, emotional, physical benefits as well as an increased ability to concentrate, improved academic performance, reduced stress and aggression and reduced risk of obesity (study by Faber Taylor in 2006). A study by Exeter University also found that ‘gardening is as good for our wellbeing as living in a wealthy neighbourhood' and England’s largest outdoor learning project revealed: ’Children are more motivated to learn when outside’ (Department for the Environment). My project will educate young people about gardening and nature as well as help prepare students for university and/or work through the skills they’ve gained, the passions that have been ignited and the confidence they’ve built. We are inclusive and want to ensure there are no barriers so everybody is allowed the chance to have fun and develop new skills. Our youngsters will all discover what they can 'cut the mustard' at!
Steps to get it done:
I’m passionate about giving young people the chance to discover what they can achieve at. As a teacher, I realised how restrictive the classroom can be and want to tackle this issue on a bigger scale. I organised a range of extra-curricular activities and events and was delighted by how many 'low-achievers’ really excelled when they tried a new sport or grew in confidence at mastering an outdoor skillI. I am a parent to three children and have experienced their draw to learning outdoors. Through homeschooling and tutoring during the pandemic, I know the children I teach are far happier and more successful when they are outside taking part in non-formal learning. I am dedicated to providing young people with outstanding life experiences and am committed to my vision that children must receive a holistic education with extra-curricular activities being key to their future happiness and success. Cut The Mustard Club is a not-for-profit CIC. All funds directly impact young people.
