More about our impact
The environment
Our orchard has and will continue to encourage greater biodiversity for the local area, supporting a variety of animal and plant species. It will create habitats for various wildlife such as birds, insects and other small mammals. When choosing trees for our orchard, a person we support, who is a keen bird watcher, was able to help us identify which trees would attract different species of birds. Our wildflowers will attract pollinators like bees and butterflies.
The local economy
We used a range of local suppliers within our project including when purchasing our trees.
Volunteering, jobs & education
Shropshire Wildlife Trust delivered sessions to the people we support, volunteers and staff on orchard management and supported us to plant the trees. We also have four volunteers who work with us at the farm, supporting us through this journey to create our community orchard.
Activity, health and leisure
Our orchard promotes the benefits of gardening and engaging in the outdoors. Once our fruit has grown, we hope our pick your own days will become a staple activity in the local area. We have installed benches around the orchard to encourage people to enjoy the space.
