Help us to create an exciting new food growing space to be enjoyed by the local community - at Roker United Reformed Church!
Demolition of an old church hall has provided a blank canvas to create an exciting new community green space! We are developing an area to grow fresh produce, to share with others and to provide staple ingredients for our community events and Social Chef cookery courses. There will be volunteer opportunities and the chance for people to connect with the natural environment. Plans for raised beds are underway and this fund will enable us to purchase a polytunnel which will take our food growing to the next level. We will establish a new composting system, using the QR composting method, advocated by Andrew Davenport of Gardeners Cottage plants. Community is at the heart of what we do, and we want to make sure that you are involved in all of our plans every step of the way. We will be offering workshops and community events, to discuss the garden plans, to learn about volunteering, community growing and creative opportunities.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
The project will bring the community together in an initiative which benefits both local people and the natural environment. Research has shown that spending time in nature can be beneficial for both physical and mental health. We hope to make people feel more connected with nature, giving them an outlet from the stresses and strains of day to day life. The project will promote learning and volunteering opportunities, uniting people from all age groups and backgrounds and there will be creative and educational workshops, offering people the chance to learn new skills. We will develop more sustainable practises; an effective composting system will not only be beneficial for our soil, it will help to reduce food waste. The project will support our Community Fridge initiative and freshly grown produce will be turned into delicious dishes as part of our food-based activities.
