More about our impact
The environment
Each art bench has a plant pot attached with the aim of improving air quality, improving pollution, helping fight climate change and prodviding new spaces for wildlife in the city centre.
The local economy
The layout of the benches around the city centre creates a trail for the public which encourages residents and visitors to explore different venues, businesses and areas of Sunderland city centre. Local businesses also benefited from increased footfall to the City centre on painting days and all of the materials that were used in the project were sourced from local North East companies.
Volunteering, jobs & education
We encouraged the public and community groups within Sunderland to get involved with decorating the art benches. Plus, 7 Volunteering roles and 2 paid employment roles were created in this project.
Arts, culture & heritage
The Art Benches project provided children and families with the opportunity to decorate their city and to feel proud of the city that they live in. In addition, participants will normally re-visit the benches once they have been installed to sit, relax and catch-up with friends and family. Plus, we hope that some visitors treat the benches like a trail, so that they can explore different places, including new developments and heritage locations. The benches also promote sites and venues that consumers may visit later.
Activity, health and leisure
The layout of the benches around the city centre creates a trail for the public which encourages residents and visitors to explore different venues, businesses and areas of Sunderland city centre. The benches are located on Park Lane, Maritime Terrace, High St West, Low Row and Lambton St. If the public goes to visit all 12 benches, the average length would be 1.3 miles and 3,000 steps. Therefore this allows participants to exercise while enjoying themselves and exploring the city, developments and changing landscape in Sunderland.
