The idea
Clapham Common is 220 acres of parkland in an area where many people do not have a garden. As a result, any sunny day will attract a huge number of picnics and parties, which generates an enormous amount of waste.
Almost all of the waste is presently thrown in standard bins, despite much of it being glass bottles and metal cans.
We are hoping to promote an increase in the amount of waste that is recycled on the Common by:
1) Adding clearer labels to the recycling-only bins;
2) Putting up posters asking people to recycle more;
3) Doing a recycling litter pick using newly purchased pickers, which can be used again on future occasions.
What we'll deliver
- Get some bin labels / stencils made and use these to label recycling-only bins clearly
- Purchase some litter pickers and arrange a recycling litter picking event
- Put up custom-designed and printed posters around Clapham Common which encourage more recycling of picnic waste
Why it's a great idea
Lambeth residents are already good at recycling, however our environmental responsibility seems to get forgotten when going for a picnic! The daily waste accumulated on the Common is an embarrassment that this idea will help address.
Steps to get it done
- Increase in % Common waste recycled, as measured by Lambeth
This idea will have ongoing, lasting benefits for both residents and the environment.
