Cirencester Open Air Swimming Pool was founded in 1869. For 152 years, this amazing community asset has been giving fresh air, activity, exercise, mindfulness and fun to the people of Cirencester and surrounding area.
The pool is run by volunteers - from the team of Trustees, the wonderful team of Pool Angels who deal with the technicalities of water heating and water quality, the tuck shop, the gate and the book sellers. The only people who are paid are the lifeguards and a pool manager.
Five years ago the pool underwent a renovation which saw a new building to house the plant, an office, women’s, men’s and disabled changing rooms with lockers, showers, toilets and changing cubicles and a function room to be used for private party hire.
The original plan included solar panels, however, costs ran away, and this element of the scheme was never installed.
The solar panels speak for themselves, as we have so many challenges regarding climate change. We need to think about both our impact on the planet and the legacy that we hand on to the next generation of swimmers.
