More about our impact
The environment
Through this project we have created an awareness on the importance of reducing waste, recycling, and upcycling. We have introduced recycling of our materials, (including paper cups and paper plates) throughout all our drop-in services. Our environmental ambassadors have campaigned for re-using and reducing household waste by holding stalls at the heart of Church Street and engaging with residents. We encouraged households to use the food recycling bins provided by the local council and explored ways of reducing food wastage for example by using left over food to create a sandwich or a salad. Walk or cycle to places, use reusable water bottles and buy less plastic and use a reusable shopping bag. Many of our participants have become more aware and conscious when throwing away household items and materials. They have now started to reuse old items and upcycle materials and objects which helps minimise the volume of discarded materials and waste being sent to landfill each year; it also reduces the need for production using new or raw materials.
The local economy
Our project has created an opportunity for learning a new skill. Understanding costs of production, stock control and marketing strategies. Our local women have benefited from generating a small household income, by producing bespoke gift bags and shopping bags selling them at local stalls, community events and to small businesses.
Volunteering, jobs & education
This project educated women and the wider community on the importance of recycling, and introduced different ways of helping the environment. The project welcomed volunteers to help raise awareness at local community events.
Arts, culture & heritage
The diversity of art and culture has been the inspiration throughout the creation of the bespoke bags. With different colours, shapes and materials, participants have used creativity and imagination in the production of the gift bags.
Activity, health and leisure
The project evolved beautifully as a drop-in for local mothers to use the project to overcome isolation and loneliness, engage in befriending activities, have fun and relaxation with huge therapeutic health benefits. It also inspired women to actively partake in an activity which contributed to society and the environment, whilst encouraging women to socialise outside of their home environment.
