Activity, health and leisure

Activity, health and leisure

Our falls prevention project has had a significant impact on promoting activity, health and leisure for older adults across Cheshire West and Chester. Between March 2023 and March 2024, we delivered 98 weekly Strength and Balance sessions at Hoole Community Centre and Ellesmere Port Sports Village, reaching over 120 older adults aged 60+ who were identified as being at high risk of falls. Each session combined 45 minutes of progressive, low-impact resistance training with 15 minutes of education on topics such as home safety, hydration, footwear, and confidence-building strategies. Participants reported meaningful improvements in both their physical health and emotional wellbeing. Assessments showed an average increase of 3.5 sit-to-stand repetitions, 78% improved balance, 84% gained greater confidence walking outdoors, and 76% reported a reduction in their fear of falling. Alongside this, 70% felt less socially isolated, highlighting the importance of the group setting as a safe and enjoyable space to build friendships and routine. The project also encouraged ongoing engagement in physical activity beyond the 12-week cycles, with around 65% of participants continuing exercise either at home or in community groups. Testimonials demonstrated the programme’s life-changing effect: participants spoke about regaining confidence to shop independently, managing daily activities more easily, and rebuilding social connections after periods of isolation. Through this blend of structured exercise, education, and community connection, the project successfully improved activity levels, reduced falls risk, enhanced confidence, and promoted healthier, more independent living for older adults in our community.
